Brusselization is a term used by urbanists to describe an anarchic urban development in a historic city. The term origined as the result of the uncontrolled development of Brussels in the 1960s and 1970s. The term can also describe developers method of destroying old buildings by neglect, allowing them to decay to the point where demolition is unavoidable.

On August 13, 1695, a 70,000-strong army under the Marshal of France François de Neufville, Duc de Villeroi attacked Brussels. The French launched a massive bombardment of the city centre with cannons and mortars, setting it on fire and flattening most of the city, and with it, the Grand Place, leaving only rubble, fire and destruction.
