Is it only me, due to my remarkably positive vision of this blessed city, or are there public works literally everywhere?
The area around my flat was turned into a bombshelled portion of Baghdad/Grozny/Beyrouth by my beloved commune's eagerness to destroy every single square meter of street. I mean, they've really applied themselves with enthusiasm to destroy every single inch of sidewalk. No chances for oversleeping with a guy pumping away your sidewalk as early as 08h00 every single weekday. The worst is it's absolutely pointless - I admit there is a need for public works from time to time. But works that actually *add* something to the previous situation. It's not like they're building a parking lot, or a new metro (or premetro) station, or the new RER, or a bloody cattle market. No, they're not changing anything. The whole square has been demolished and rebuilt... with different tiles. Ok, I'll admit they've probably added some area to the sidewalks. Good job, for some 7 months of works, disturbing traffic, pedestrians, shops and covering the whole area with dust, building materials and annoying everyone for about 10 hours a day.Best of all, when we first moved to this square they were closing down the previous works. We enjoyed the square for two full weeks - before it was all demolished again. As I said, pointless.
Moving on, there really are works everywhere. We have been looking lately for a new flat, and we've been astonished to find whole sections of streets in Etterbeek completely uncovered (as in a brand new development). I must admit that in this are you could at least see pipes and Belgacom vans around, sign that at least there is a reason behind it!
